Every operator asks these four questions before they start. Here are the straight answers — the same ones we'd give a friend.
1. Does it hurt my battery?
SnowGain only tunnels when the phone is idle and applies conservative caps. Most operators report under 5% extra daily drain, and essentially zero when the screen is off and the phone is on WiFi.
Tips that keep it that way:
- Tunnel on WiFi only (the default).
- Keep the phone cool — heat, not the tunnel, is what ages batteries.
- Use adaptive charging (20–80%) if your phone supports it.
2. Will it eat my data plan?
No — WiFi-only is the default. The app will not tunnel on mobile data unless you explicitly flip the switch, and even then you set a daily GB cap. On unlimited home fibre, the marginal cost of the routed traffic is part of your plan anyway.
3. What does the app actually see?
Only what it needs to route traffic:
- An outbound tunnel to the Snowpad network.
- Your node token and device metadata you registered (model, OS, network type).
It does not read contacts, messages, photos, files, or browsing history. Customer traffic passes through the tunnel as encrypted SOCKS5 streams — your device is a pipe, not a camera. You can stop the tunnel any time from the app, and stopping is instant.
4. Is this legal?
Bandwidth sharing through your own devices and connections is legal in India and in the localities Snowpad operates. You're reselling a slice of connectivity you already pay for — the same model as every DePIN and many ISP reseller programs. You remain responsible for your own connection's terms of service, so check your plan's fair-use policy.
Snowpad routes legitimate commercial traffic (web data, ad verification, price monitoring) through the network, with abuse monitoring on the gateway. That's also why nodes that behave badly get delisted — it protects everyone else's earnings.
The 30-second summary
| Worry | Reality |
|---|---|
| Battery | <5% daily drain, tunneled only when idle |
| Mobile data | WiFi-only default, caps you control |
| Privacy | No personal data access; encrypted pass-through |
| Legality | Legal; you keep responsibility for your own plan's ToS |
